The Allen Community College Board of Trustees voted to postpone the grievance appeal of Red Devil Cross Country and Track and Field head coach Vince DeGrado until its July 10 board meeting.
DeGrado requested the delay after his attorney was unable to attend Tuesdays board meeting.
The grievance pertains to a March 8 agreement signed by DeGrado, ACC Athletics Director Doug Desmarteau, and President John Masterson.
DeGrado is trying to get the agreement removed from the record, because he now feels that several parts of the contract are inconsistent with certain bylaws set down by the school, the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference, the NJCAA, and Kansas state labor laws.
The agreement was signed less than a week after the track coach was involved in a physical altercation with an assistant coach from a rival college at the Indoor National Championship meet in Lubbock, Texas.
DeGrado was ejected from the meet following the exchange and subsequently arrested.
The agreement states that DeGrado would be suspended from meets on March 15, 17, and 31, and would be required to attend anger management counseling at his own expense. He also agreed to write formal letters of apology to the NJCAA, KJCCC and the assistant coach involved in the altercation.
The agreement also states that, pending a conviction on the assault charge stemming from the altercation, De-Grado will be suspended from any meets during the period that he is on probation or diversion.
Since the agreement, the NJCAA has officially suspended De-Grado from attending any NJCAA cross country, track and field, or half marathon events through the 2019-2020 season.
Allen County and DeGrado are still in the appeals process with the NJCAA in hopes of securing for DeGrado a lighter sentence.
